Filipino boxer Gerald Rustia won in the +201 lbs. weight division on Feb. 11 at the Georgia Duke Sports Center in Vacaville, CA.
The 27 year-old Hayward native, who has been boxing for nearly 9 years, was able to outpoint and defeat Jose Duran from San Jose PAL in the finals match.
"I felt really good about winning," said Rustia, who trains at The Kennel Boxing Gym in San Leandro. "This is my first time fighting in the +201 lbs. division and this is my first tournament. To come out winning the +201 lbs. division and qualifying for state is huge on any level."
After winning the qualifiers, the Filipino pugilist plans to move back down and continue his boxing career at the 178 lbs. division.
"I plan on making 2017 my most active year," Rustia said. "I want to say thank you to my Lord and Savior, Jesus for blessing me. Thank you to my family, team, coaches, and friends for their ongoing support."
