THE Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is conducting on Wednesday the Philippine Nuclear Science Quiz (PNSQ) Regional Competition in Zamboanga City.

DOST regional director Brenda Nazareth-Manzano said the winners in the regional elimination will represent the Zamboanga Peninsula Region in the PNSQ national competition.

She said the national competition is set on December 13 at the Nido fortified Science Discovery Center at the SM Mall of Asia, Pasay City.

Manzano said that the participating institutions are required to field a team entry composed of two students -- one junior and one senior -- and an official coach.

The winning top two teams will receive trophies and certificate of appreciation will be awarded to the official coach, Manzano said.

The non-winning teams will receive certificate of participation, she added.

PNSQ, the first nuclear science quiz to be held with regional participation, is in line with DOST-Philippine Nuclear Research Institute's 40th Atomic Energy Week celebration from December 10 to 14.

The AEW celebration is themed: "Nuclear Science, Technology and Innovation: Engine for Growth and Development."

Manzano said that big prizes await the winners of the PNSQ-national competition to include cash prizes in the amount of P20,000, P15,000, P10,000 for the first, second and third placers, respectively.

In addition, Manzano said that a medal of recognition for each member of the team, a trophy for the school and a plaque of recognition for the coach will be given away to the winners of the competition during the AEW closing ceremonies scheduled to be held on Friday of next week.

The annual AEW celebration, as mandated under Presidential Proclamation No. 1211 in 1973, aims to generate awareness of the Filipino people on the beneficial uses of nuclear science and technology in food and agriculture, health and, medicine, industry energy, and the environment, she said. (Bong Garcia)
