Lea Salonga, H.E.R., Liza Soberano lead DreamWorks’ voice cast in Filipino-inspired film ‘Forgotten Island’
Yes, Virginia, Tony award winner and Broadway legend Lea Salonga, Filipino American Grammy winner H.E.R., and Filipino American actress Liza Soberano are lending their voices to DreamWorks Animation’s upcoming film “Forgotten Island,” the first international production by a major studio to spotlight Filipino stories.
The three will be joined by Filipino-Canadian actor and “Top Gun: Maverick” star Manny Jacinto, “21 Jump Street’s”Dave Franco, and “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On” actress Jenny Slate.
Lea, whose real name is Maria Lea Carmen I. Salonga, remains a Filipino national but a U.S. permanent resident with a green card which she obtained as an “alien of extraordinary ability” after her award-winning role in Miss Saigon in Broadway.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the animated adventure is set on the island of Nakali, a world inspired by Philippine mythology, where lifelong friends Jo (voiced by H.E.R.) and Raissa (Soberano) become stranded. The pair must navigate the island’s mysteries, discovering that the only way home might mean giving up their shared memories.
The film, set for release in September 2026 under Universal Pictures, is written and directed by Joel Crawford and Filipino-American filmmaker Januel Mercado, the duo behind “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” and “The Croods: A New Age.”
Salonga and Soberano both confirmed their involvement in the movie on social media.
Salonga, who made history as the first Filipino to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, is best known for her Disney roles in “Aladdin” and “Mulan.”
She is best known for her Tony Award-winning role in “Miss Saigon.” In addition to a Tony, she has won the Olivier, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, Theater World Awards, Time100 Impact Award from Time Magazine, and the Gold Legend Award from Gold House.
Salonga recent starred in the West End production of Stephen Sondheim’s musical revue, Old Friends, and as Aurora in “Here Lies Love” on Broadway, which she also produced. Earlier this year, she appeared in the Broadway transfer of “Old Friends” and also served as a singing voice in Netflix’s “KPop Demon Hunters.”
Soberano, who was born in Santa Clara, California whose real name is Hope Elizabeth Soberano, recently appeared in the U.S. film “Lisa Frankenstein,” while H.E.R. continues to expand her acting career following her Oscar-winning success in music.
H.E.R. , whose real name is Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson, is a multi-awarded American R&B singer-songwriter. She has won an Academy Award, a Children’s and Family Emmy Award, and five Grammy Awards, and been nominated for a Golden Globe Award, three American Music Awards, and four Billboard Music Awards.
