ALICE H. REYES: Matthew on my mind

Today, my grandson, Matthew Johnston Jr.,will be turning 32.

       How time has flown indeed!.

It seems just yesterday when he was absorbed in games on the internet, when he was the apple of his Yoyo’s eyes.

Today, he is all grown up, 6 ft 4 inches tall, towering over me. He is also married and the father of one, going on two.

Despite that, Matthew will always be the young Matt to me.

I was fortunate to be at Matt’s wedding to Cristina in Las Vegas, with his mother Aisha two years ago.

Seeing his eyes light up when he saw me at the Catholic church there warmed the cockles of my heart.

Forgotten were the years between when we were so far apart, distance-wise.

His mother tells me that he is perpetually busy these days, running his PR company and being husband and father.

He is a far cry from the Matthew of his youth , who cared so much about playing video games.

I am proud of what Matt has become:hard-working, responsible, driven to succeed.

I know his grandpa  , whom he called Yoyo, now gone for  6 years now, would have been so proud of him as well..

Today, his special day, I send Matt my  heartfelt wishes for God to pour abundant blessings on him and his growing family.

Happy birthday, grandson, from your loving Nana.
