EDITORIAL: Should Trump follow Biden?

Perhaps the time has come for the Republican Party to seriously consider convincing Donald Trump to follow in the footsteps of Joe Biden, and call it a day.

If President Biden could accept the fact that age had finally caught up with him, there is no reason why former President Trump cannot do the same. He is, after all, a mere three years younger than Biden, and Trump can no longer pretend that he is as mentally and physically fit as he was when he first won the presidency in 2016.

More and more, he shows proof that his mental facilities are deteriorating, and could conceivably pose a danger to the country if it reaches a point when he no longer knows what he is doing. He is not a young 78 as he pretends, but a very old 78.

The question must be asked: Does it make sense for a very senior citizen like Trump to have his shaky hands on the nuclear button? With his judgement already impaired, the very idea of Trump erratically thinking that he can order the use of nukes on any country – even a friendly one —  is nothing less than totally frightening.

For the GOP, there is another reason why they should coerce Trump to call it quits.

In the latest surveys, Vice President Kamala Harris has already erased the lead Trump had in almost all swing states. This means that her path to the presidency has become easier.

Like it or not, she is an extremely viable candidate. She has turned out to be an appealing bet to the all-important youth vote, which can make a difference in November. Harris has shown that she is an excellent public speaker, and would likely crush Trump if he were ever to agree to debate the Democratic candidate.

Betting odds now favor Harris to win in the race later this year, and the odds will most likely continue to swing in her favor to the point that she may end up winning by a landslide.

This then is the best reason for the Republican Party to take whatever steps are needed to force Trump out of the race.

Trump will almost certainly lose, but another bet may possibly defeat Harris.

Who that bet is, we do not know. But at least one name comes to mind, and she may give Harris and the Democrats a run for their money.

We of course refer to Nikki Haley, who has her own potent following in the party. She was the last one to exit the primaries, leading to Trump being selected as the party’s candidate. There are other possible replacements for Trump, to be sure, such as Ron DeSantis. JD Vance? No. Just no.

Now Haley vs Harris can be a most intriguing battle. Both are intelligent, charismatic women who have much to offer the electorate. Both also represent wildly opposing political views, which gives voters a real choice.

This scenario may or may not come to pass, but for now, unless Trump is convinced to give way to someone more qualified and less weird, the GOP will be facing a probable defeat in November.
